ThTP5.12 Assessment of malnutrition and nutritional interventions in patients presenting with acute small bowel obstruction – are we ‘getting it right first time’?

Abstract Aims High levels of morbidity and mortality are associated with small bowel obstruction (SBO), a common general surgical emergency. Assessment malnutrition introduction early nutritional interventions paramount importance in the management algorithm these patients. We audited our practice managing acute at busy district hospital comparing against National Audit Small Bowel Obstruction (NASBO) recommendations. Methods Data were gathered for all patients presenting to Trust between 01/08/2022 30/11/2022. In depth review patient case records was undertaken using electronic record systems (e-Track Evolve). Results 195 admitted obstruction. 68 (35%) had SBO (M: F; 34:34). 58 (85%) no documentation duration which they been ‘nil by mouth’ (NBM) prior hospitalisation. Malnutrition universal screening tool score (MUST score) completed 29 (43%) 59% an emergency computed tomography (CT) confirmed diagnosis SBO. 60% managed non-operatively. On average, kept ‘NBM’ two days (range; 1-16 days). Average waiting time peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) 9.6 days. Conclusions Evaluating has highlighted multiple areas improvement ‘get it right first time’. have included stakeholders; nursing staff, dieticians, surgeons, junior doctors vascular access team implement action plan optimise this cohort line NASBO guidelines.
